Pre/Post Surgery Rehabilitation aims to prepare the patient for surgery and accelerate recovery and functional independence after surgery. Physiotherapy exercises and techniques help in recovery, pain management, and improving muscle strength.

Goals of Pre/Post Surgery Physiotherapy

  • Pre-surgery: Maintain joint mobility and muscle strength

  • Post-surgery: Reduce pain and swelling

  • Prevent muscle atrophy and enhance functional recovery

  • Restore daily activities and independence

Physiotherapy Treatments

1. Pre-Surgery Rehabilitation

  • Joint mobility and flexibility exercises

  • Muscle strengthening, especially around the surgical site

  • Functional training and patient education for post-surgery care

2. Post-Surgery Rehabilitation

  • Pain relief techniques: Ice, TENS, gentle massage

  • Early mobilization and passive/active-assisted range of motion exercises

  • Gradual muscle strengthening

  • Gait training, balance, and functional activity training

  • Scar tissue management and joint mobilization if required

3. Home Exercise Program

  • Daily exercises to maintain joint mobility and prevent stiffness

  • Strengthening and functional exercises as guided by the physiotherapist

  • Posture correction and ergonomics education

4. Functional and Occupational Training

  • Training for daily activities and work-related tasks

  • Training in adaptive techniques and use of assistive devices

Frequency and Duration

  • Pre-surgery: 1–3 sessions per week depending on the condition

  • Post-surgery: 2–5 sessions per week initially, gradually reducing as functional recovery improves

  • Daily adherence to the home exercise program is essential for recovery

  • Full functional recovery may take 4–12 weeks depending on the type of surgery
