Pre/Post Surgery Rehabilitation aims to prepare the patient for surgery and accelerate recovery and functional independence after surgery. Physiotherapy exercises and techniques help in recovery, pain management, and improving muscle strength.
Pre-surgery: Maintain joint mobility and muscle strength
Post-surgery: Reduce pain and swelling
Prevent muscle atrophy and enhance functional recovery
Restore daily activities and independence
Joint mobility and flexibility exercises
Muscle strengthening, especially around the surgical site
Functional training and patient education for post-surgery care
Pain relief techniques: Ice, TENS, gentle massage
Early mobilization and passive/active-assisted range of motion exercises
Gradual muscle strengthening
Gait training, balance, and functional activity training
Scar tissue management and joint mobilization if required
Daily exercises to maintain joint mobility and prevent stiffness
Strengthening and functional exercises as guided by the physiotherapist
Posture correction and ergonomics education
Training for daily activities and work-related tasks
Training in adaptive techniques and use of assistive devices
Pre-surgery: 1–3 sessions per week depending on the condition
Post-surgery: 2–5 sessions per week initially, gradually reducing as functional recovery improves
Daily adherence to the home exercise program is essential for recovery
Full functional recovery may take 4–12 weeks depending on the type of surgery
