Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common condition in which pressure is applied to the median nerve inside the wrist. This can cause pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers, making daily activities difficult.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers

  • Increased pain or burning sensation in the hand at night

  • Weak grip and difficulty holding objects

  • Pain radiating from the wrist to the hand

Goals of Physiotherapy

  • Reduce pain and inflammation

  • Decrease pressure on the median nerve

  • Improve wrist and hand movement

  • Restore functional use of the hand

Physiotherapy Treatments

1. Pain Relief Techniques

  • Cold Therapy: Ice packs are used to reduce pain and swelling.

  • Ultrasound Therapy: Helps promote tissue healing and reduce nerve compression.

  • TENS Therapy: Used for pain relief and nerve stimulation.

2. Stretching and Range of Motion Exercises

  • Wrist Flexor Stretch: Stretches the forearm muscles.

  • Wrist Extensor Stretch: Relaxes tight muscles.

  • Median Nerve Gliding Exercises: Improve nerve mobility.

  • Finger Stretching: Improves finger flexibility.

3. Strengthening Exercises

Once pain decreases and movement improves:

  • Grip Strengthening: Using a soft ball or therapy putty.

  • Wrist Strengthening: Exercises with light resistance.

  • Thumb Strengthening: To improve thumb stability.

4. Splinting and Ergonomic Advice

  • Use of a night splint to keep the wrist in a neutral position.

  • Ergonomic corrections for computer and workplace posture.

5. Functional Training

  • Training for daily activities such as typing, writing, and gripping.

  • Education on preventing overuse and repetitive strain injuries.

Frequency and Duration

  • Physiotherapy sessions are usually scheduled 2–4 times per week.

  • A home exercise program is essential for recovery.

  • Noticeable improvement is often seen within 6–8 weeks.
