Slip Disc Physiotherapy

Slip Disc (Disc Herniation)

A slip disc, also known as disc herniation, occurs when a spinal disc moves out of its normal position and puts pressure on nearby nerves. This can cause pain in the back or neck, along with numbness, tingling, and weakness in the arms or legs.

Symptoms of Slip Disc

  • Lower back or neck pain that may radiate to the legs or arms

  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation in the arms or legs

  • Muscle weakness and difficulty in movement

  • Increased pain while sitting for long periods or bending forward

Goals of Physiotherapy

  • Reduce pain and inflammation

  • Decrease nerve compression

  • Improve spinal mobility and flexibility

  • Strengthen core and back muscles

Physiotherapy Treatments

1. Pain Relief Techniques

  • Heat Therapy: Helps relax muscles and improve blood circulation.

  • Cold Therapy: Reduces acute pain and inflammation.

  • TENS Therapy: Used for pain relief and nerve stimulation.

  • Ultrasound Therapy: Assists in deep tissue healing.

2. Stretching and Range of Motion Exercises

  • Hamstring Stretch: Reduces pressure on the lower back.

  • Back Flexion & Extension Exercises: Improve spinal mobility.

  • Pelvic Tilts: Help relax the lower back muscles.

  • Neural Stretching: Improves nerve flexibility.

3. Strengthening Exercises

Once pain is under control:

  • Core Strengthening: For abdominal and back muscles.

  • Back Extensor Strengthening: To support the spine.

  • Glute Strengthening: Improves lower body stability.

4. Postural Correction and Ergonomics

  • Training in correct posture for sitting, standing, and lifting.

  • Ergonomic guidance for office work and daily activities.

5. Traction and Manual Therapy

  • Spinal traction to reduce pressure on nerves.

  • Manual therapy techniques to reduce pain and stiffness.

Frequency and Duration

  • Physiotherapy sessions are initially recommended 3–5 days per week.

  • A home exercise program is essential for long-term recovery.

  • Noticeable improvement may be seen within 8–12 weeks.
