Tendonitis Physiotherapy

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a condition in which a tendon (the tissue connecting muscle to bone) becomes inflamed or irritated. It usually results from repetitive stress, overuse, or injury. Physiotherapy helps reduce pain, control inflammation, and promote tendon healing.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness in the tendon area

  • Swelling and mild redness

  • Pain during movement and stiffness

  • Functional limitation and weakness

Goals of Physiotherapy

  • Reduce inflammation and pain

  • Improve tendon flexibility and range of motion

  • Strengthen surrounding muscles to support the tendon

  • Restore functional activities and daily tasks

Physiotherapy Treatments

1. Pain Relief Techniques

  • Ice Therapy: To reduce acute inflammation and pain

  • Heat Therapy: For chronic stiffness and muscle relaxation

  • TENS: For pain modulation

2. Stretching Exercises

  • Gentle tendon stretches depending on the affected area

  • Flexibility exercises for the muscle-tendon unit

3. Strengthening Exercises

After inflammation is under control:

  • Start with isometric strengthening exercises

  • Progressive resistance exercises using TheraBands or weights

  • Functional strengthening exercises

4. Manual Therapy

  • Soft tissue mobilization and massage to reduce tendon stiffness

  • Joint mobilization if joint stiffness is also present

5. Functional Training

  • Activity modification and ergonomic guidance to prevent recurrence

  • Restore daily tasks and sport-specific activities

Frequency and Duration

  • Physiotherapy sessions 2–4 times per week depending on severity

  • Regular adherence to a home exercise program is essential

  • Recovery and return to pain-free function usually occurs within 4–8 weeks
